PTV - Iran’s national under-15 football team has finished second and claimed the silver medal at the 2nd Asian Youth Games in China, after losing the final match to powerhouse South Korea, which won the gold.
The South Korean squad defeated the Iranians 1-0 in a penalty shootout on Friday at the Jiangning Sports Center in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.
Kim Jungmin scored the lone goal of the game two minutes into the second half.
In another match of the day, North Korea edged past Iraq 6-5 to snatch the bronze medal.
National Iranian under-15 football team advanced to the final of the 2nd Asian Youth Games after defeating Iraq in a penalty shootout in the semifinal.
The Iranian team defeated Iraq 1-0 in the semifinal match at Wutaishan Stadium in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing on Wednesday.
The penalty kick taker -- Iranian striker Shahab Rashno -- put the ball at the back of the net in the 24th minute to score the sole goal of the game.
The 2nd Asian Youth Games opened in Nanjing on August 16, and wraps up on August 24.
The games serve as a dress-rehearsal for the upcoming 2014 Summer Youth Olympics, which will be held in the same city.
The 2nd Asian Youth Games feature 122 events under 16 sports: aquatics (including swimming and diving), athletics, badminton, basketball, fencing, football, golf, handball, judo, rugby, shooting, squash, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo and weightlifting.
A subordinate of the Olympic Council of Asia, the Asian Youth Games is a quadrennial multi-sports event. The previous event was held in Singapore.
