Ali Karimi

TEHRAN - Iran international midfielder Ali Karimi was selected as the most popular Asian player on Wednesday in an internet poll held by The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

Karimi won 134,898 of the votes followed by his countryman Farhad Majidi with 123,382 of the votes. Yasser Al-Qahtani of Saudi Arabia, who currently plays for Al-Ain Sports Club, became third with 42,685.

Atletico Madrid Turk player Arda Turan is the European most popular player with 27,828 of the votes. Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo is second with 11,605 of votes and Bulgarian Berbatov came third with 10,046.

Universidad de Chile Santiago’s Eduardo Jesss Vargas from Chile has been voted as the South American most popular player with 53,774 of the votes. Hamburger striker Paolo Guerrero from Peru finished at second with 23,641 and his countryman Juan Manuel Vargas who plays for Fiorentina came third with 9,501.

Barcelona iconic striker Lionel Messi from Argentina and Brazilian Real Madrid midfielder Kaka were selected fourth and fifth.

Melbourne Victory striker Harry Kewell was selected as Oceania’s most popular player with 132 followed by his countryman Everton striker Tim Cahill (42) and New Zealand’s Blackburn Rovers Ryan William Nelsen (29).

Mexican Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez came first in
CONCACAF region with 12,941, Houston Dynamo Carlo Costly from Honduras (8,655) and Veracruz Carlos Ruiz from Guatemala (6,218) finished in second and third places.

Moroccan Nadir Lamyaghri, who plays in Wydad AC Casablanca, was named as the African most popular player with 21,707 of the votes, Al-Merreikh Omdurman player Faisal Agab Sido from Sudan came second with 3,104 and Tunisian Oussama Darragi from Esperance Sportive team finished at third place with a total of 3,029 votes.
