Aghily and Uzbekistan's Server Djeparov are the only two of the six candidates for the 2011 AFC Player of the Year present for Wednesday's event in Kuala Lumpur, meaning - with only those attending eligible to win - one of the pair will claim the honour.
Japan's Keisuke Honda (CSKA Moscow) and Shinji Kagawa
(Borussia Dortmund) cannot attend the ceremony due to Champions League
commitments with their respective clubs, while Korean pair Koo Ja-Cheol and
Yeom Ki-Hun are also absent.
Speaking at Tuesday's press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Al Arabi defender Aghily said he would relish the chance to join compatriots Daei, Mehdi Mahdavikia, Khodadad Azizi and Ali Karimi in winning the award.
Daei won the award in 1999, with the former Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC striker finishing with more than 100 international goals to his name.
"It would be an honour for me to join these great names in football. Ali Daei, for example, is not just a great name in Iran or Asia as he is known throughout the world," he said.
Iranian striker Farhad Majidi was runner-up to Seongnam Ilhwa's Australian defender Sasa Ognenovski in 2010. Aghily would love to improve on that finish.
"A lot of Iranian fans all over the world are hoping and willing me to get the award and I am hoping to go one better (than Majidi) and make them happy," he said.
"I am very proud to be a candidate for the award and stand shoulder to shoulder with the best referees, coaches and player in Asia."
