IRNA - Head of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Sepp Blatter in a letter to the head of Iranian Football Federation, Ali Kaffashiyan, expressed condolences over death of the legendary Iranian goalkeeper, Nasser Hejazi.

The letter reads, “I am writing the letter with a grieving heart on the death of Hejazi, former goalkeeper of Iran’s National Football Team.”

He made great contributions as the goalkeeper of national team, he said.

“I express condolences on behalf of FIFA and international football community to the Iranian nation and Hejazi’s family and friends,” he said.

Meanwhile, Asian Football Confederation President Mohamed bin Hammam condoled Hejazi’s family and Iranian footballers on his demise.

Legendary Iranian goalkeeper and football coach, Nasser Hejazi, passed away at the age of 62 in Tehran’s Kasra Hospital after a long battle with lung cancer.

The unforgettable Hejazi had a brilliant record of playing. Nicknamed, ‘The Legend’, Hejazi was one of the most famous football players in Iran.

He was the goalkeeper of Iran national football team in the 1960’s and 1970’s and won the AFC Asian Cup twice, one time in Asian Games. He played in the 1976 Summer Olympics and 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentine.

In 2000, the Asian Football Confederation ranked him the second best Asian goalkeeper of the 20th century.

He was chosen as the second best goalkeeper in Asia by Asian Football Federation and was also selected as the best goalkeeper in the world for keeping clean sheet for his national team for 5 months or a record 837 minutes.
