Hashemian bade farewell to the national team after 11 years. The Bochum striker made 50 caps for Iran and scored 13 times.
The 33-year-old player wrote on his website, “I could not qualify for the World Cup with Iran as a player, but I hope that to do that as a coach.”
“Iran had good potential but missed the chance of qualifying for the event because of replacement of coaches. Other players and I wanted to help the team book a berth in the World Cup, but unfortunately we could not do that,” he added.
“I want to end my playing and pave the way for young players to help the team to get good results in the next matches,” he concluded.
Vahid Hashemian has also played for Hamburg and Bayern Munich.
Mehdi Mahdavikia and Ali Karimi also hung up their boots last week after Iran failed to advance to the World Cup.
