GOAL - Iran chalked their first victory under new coach Afshin Ghotbi by defeating Indonesia's Under-23 team 5-0 in Karaj’s Enghelab Stadium.

The match that was attended by 20,000 fans had a slow start, and neither team looked very impressive.

However, 20 minutes into the match an own goal gave Iran the lead.

Iran showed considerably better organization and more determination in the second half and in the 54th minute doubled their lead through midfielder Freydoon Zandi.

Striker Arash Borhani put the game out of Indonesia’s reach on minute 63 and ten minutes later Mohammadreza Khalatbari scored a fourth.

In the closing minutes of the regular time Zandi got his second and the game’s final goal.

After the match, an obviously pleased Ghotbi thanked the fans, Indonesians, and the IFF (Iran Football Federation) for making this friendly possible.

“Our team exhibited some organized football today. Today’s friendly had a festive mood and we hope to continue to maintain this festive mood until our face-off with North Korea," said Ghotbi.

“We lost our focus after we went ahead by four goals. There is obviously more work to be done.”

Iran have three World Cup qualifiers in June, at home to UAE and away at North and South Korea.

First, Ghotbi will take the team to China to acclimatise.

As they languish in fourth in their group with six points from five games, Team Melli need to take points from all remaining games to have a chance of automatic qualification.

Talking about his final roster, Ghotbi continued, “I will release the list tomorrow morning. The European and UAE based, as well as a few Perspolis players will be on the list. I think we in effect have two good teams with a healthy mix of veterans and youth.

“We’ll take 26 players to China. Unfortunately, a few of our best players are not in their best shape due to a taxing club football season. But I am confident that once we blend in the absent players, we’ll have a very solid team.

“Our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup.”
