Kuala Lumpur, Aug 14, IRNA -- Iran has been
voted for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Executive Committee members
for the four-year term at the AFC congress in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
Iran was among eight other members countries elected for the post. These
eight countries were Philippines, Iraq, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Nepal,
India, Uzbekistan and Oman.
They will serve in the new AFC Executive Committee for a four-year term
starting 2002.
Mohsen Safeie Farahani, president of Iran Football Association is heading
Iranian delegation to the congress.
The United Arab Emirates were defeated by Oman in a run-off vote after the
two countries were tied in the first round of voting. Nineteen countries,
including Iran were contesting for the position.
Other 18 countries are Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Guam, Hong Kong,
India, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Lebanon, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines,
Saudi Arabia, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.
Brunei has withdrawn from the contest for the post. Seen, Kuwaiti Asad
Taqi's election as vice-president means Kuwait
have to be withdrawn from the contest for Executive Committee member as
required by the election rules.
Thailand's Worawi Makudi and Japan's Junji Ogura have been returned as AFC
representatives on the FIFA Executive Committee.
In the three-way battle for the two AFC seats on the FIFA Executive
Committee, Worawi and Ogura each garnered 25 votes to edge out Yusef Al
Serkal, who had 23 votes.
Worawi has served on the FIFA Executive Committee since 1997 while Ogura has
been elected to the position for the first time. The other Asian incumbent
on the FIFA Executive Committee, Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Al Dabal, withdrew
from the election. The other positions that were up for election at the
congress went unopposed.
Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar has been unanimously been elected as the new
president, while Dr Chung Mong Joon of Korea Republic remains the FIFA
vice-president and General Farouk Bouzo of Syria hold to his position of
honorary secretary.
Following the withdrawal of India's Das Munsi from the AFC vice-presidents'
race, the four remaining nominees -- Kuwait's Asad Taqi, China's Zhang
Jiong, Sri Lanka's V.M. Fernando and Malaysia's Tengku Abdullah Sultan
Ahmad Shah were returned unopposed.
Of the four vice-presidents, only Tengku Abdullah was not an incumbent.
