Masood Shojaei Iraq

AFC - Substitute Ali Abbas’ added-time strike secured a famous 2-1 victory for Iraq against Islamic Republic of Iran at Amman International Stadium on Matchday Five of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers on Thursday.

Going into the match, the two sides were separated by a single point at the summit of Group C, with Iraq leading the standings with seven points.

But Bahrain’s goalless draw in Hong Kong meant whichever side that won the tie would earn the top spot by the end of matchday.

Iraq got off to a flying start as Persepolis midfielder Bashar Resan supplied a pinpoint cross from the right into the path of Ali Adnan who swept it first time at the far post.

The left-back’s shot was parried by Alireza Beiranvand, but only as far as Mohanad Ali who rifled the ball into the roof of the net to put the Lions of Mesopotamia in the lead after just 11 minutes.

Iran drew level in the 25th minute through Ahmed Nourollahi.

Mohammad Mohebi advanced down the right to the byline and pulled back for Nourollahi at the edge of the penalty box, and the Persepolis midfielder collected the ball and fired into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

A tight second half changed drastically as Iran were reduced to 10 men as Masoud Shojaei was sent off for a second booking in the 81st minute.

That was followed by a dramatic finish as, replacing goalscorer Ali, substitute Abbas added his name to the scoresheet in the second minute of added time.

The Al Zawraa striker rose highest to head home Amjed Attwan’s out-swinging corner to send the Iraqi crowd in Amman into raptures with Iraq's winner.

Walking away with the three points, Iraq lead the group going into their game against second-placed Bahrain next week, while Iran will remain in third until 2020 as their next fixture sees them hosting Hong Kong in March.

Team Melli have 4 fundamental issues which needs to be addressed before 2020!

1: The organisation is poorly managed and have no clear goal or creative vision.
2: The coach is no way idealistic for team melli.
3: You never change a winning team, unless you change the whole strategy which have been the attempt here. But if you change the coaching staff after 8 years due to not reaching the goal of beyond group stage at WC + gold at AFC which I find agreeable - then you need at least to keep the starting 11 - but remove everybody that has reached 30+ years of age and add young talent, to build a new team to be ready for the next WC and AFC as that would be in 4-5 years, even if you loose a game or two so goodbye and thank you to Shojaei, Dejagah, Ebrahimi, Ghafouri, Amiri and even Hajsafi, Rezarian and Ansarifard should be only on the bench as you are building a new young team. Adding players like Delfi, Moharrami, Sayyadmanesh, Abedzadeh is a must to achieve future results. Leaving out Jahanbaksh, Ezatolohai and Ghoddos is changing a winning team and doesn't work although the three have arguable cases.
4: The new strategy should include friendly games even with clubs like back in Karimi era to build the confidence and holistic stamina of the new team. There should also be a clear line for media harassment, youth programmes aligned directly with team melli + sponsorship (even private as the Qatari, UAE etc use).

Give me the team and I'll break records because Iran has in all fields always had the talent, the willingness and fighting spirit. But the organisation, the arrogance and waste of time has always been our people's biggest flaws. And sadly this shines through in our football.

PS. For Gods sake privatise Esteghlal and Perspolis so there can come some real money and management behind the two biggest clubs.
