Dejagah still undecided on German or Iranian national football

IRNA - VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Ashkan Dejagah has yet to make a decision on whether he wants to play for the national football team of his native country Iran or Germany, his father Mohammad Dejagah told IRNA in an exclusive interview in Berlin late Monday evening.

"Ashkan does really want to play for Iran and he has repeatedly said this, however right now, he wants to keep playing for Germany's under- 21 team until his eligibility ends in less than a year. After that, he will make a definite decision on his national football squad future," Mohammad Dejagah said.

Ashkan's father stressed that making a final decision would be "very difficult", especially if the German national football team nominates him for the line-up.

"If there is an offer from the German national team, we would have to think about it. After all, the German side has also invested a great deal in the football career of my son," he added.

Dejagah stressed that a possible decision against joining triple World and Euro Cup winners Germany may also create problems for his son in the club.

Mohammad Dejagah said he has informed Team Melli coach Amir Ghaleh-Noei of Ashkan's decision.

"I have told him (Ghaleh-Noei) that Ashkan is not in a position right now to play for Iran. At the present time, he has an obligation to play for Germany's under-21 squad. It would morally be wrong to abandon the team ahead of the under-21 Euro championship," he added.

The under-21 national team half-back is regarded as one of the Germany's great football hopes by experts.

According to former German national team assistant coach Michael Skibbe, Dejagah has "excellent prospects" to join the A-team in the near future .
Dejagah signed a three-year deal with Wolfsburg in late spring after moving on a free transfer basis from Bundesliga rivals Hertha Berlin.
