Iran, Karimi run riot

FIFA - Three-time Asian champions Iran knocked out Korea Republic 4-3 in China 2004's last quarter-final, a remarkable match from Jinan. Widely expected to be a smashing game of football, the more than 50,000 fans in attendance were not to be disappointed as goals tumbled in over an enthralling 90 minutes.

Ali Karimi's superb hat trick launched the Persians into the last four, though the Koreans hit back to draw level on three occasions in an intensely entertaining seesaw battle.

In the 10th minute, Karimi put the Iranians ahead deservedly. Heading home from a fine cross, the Middle Eastern side were rewarded for owning the early moments. But after Ebrahim Taghipour was stretchered off with a head injury, the Koreans took quick advantage of their temporary superiority, drawing level through Seol Ki-hyeon.

Karimi then struck again with his head on the 20-minute mark, after linking up well with lively Mehdi Mahdavikia. But just five minutes later, Lee Dong-gook grabbed his fourth goal of the finals to draw level once more.

Six minutes into the second half, Park Jin-sub turned the ball into his own net to give Karimi a break from the scoring responsibilities. The miscue was followed by yet another Korean equaliser in minute 68. Kim Nam-il's shot had goal written all over it.

And with just 13 minutes to go, Karimi turned up at the near post to turn an inch-perfect Mahdavikia cross past Lee Woon-Jae in the Korean goal.

Iran boss Branko Ivankovic was thrilled with the goal-littered victory.

"It was a difficult match," he said. "But we played brilliantly and showed the true charm and spirit of football."

With a tough semi-final clash with hosts China up next, Ivankovic had only one thing on his mind: "We are here to be champions," he told reporters in all seriousness.
