AFC - Mehdi Taremi’s goal extended Islamic Republic of Iran’s unbeaten run in Asia’s qualifying tournament for the FIFA World Cup finals to six games after a 1-0 away victory over Qatar on Thursday.

A pulsating encounter saw both sides create chances throughout, although it was the visitors who carved out the better of the early opportunities. Qatari ‘keeper Saad Al Sheeb was twice called into action before half-time to deny livewire forward Sardar Azmoun.

Iran eventually took the lead in the 52nd minute when Karim Ansarifard’s delightful through ball found Taremi in space, with the Persepolis striker making no mistake with his finish.

Azmoun and Ehsan Hajsafi enjoyed further opportunities to double the Iranians’ advantage, while a stoppage time Sebastian Soria effort saved by Alireza Beiranvand was the closest Qatar came to restoring parity.

The result extends Iran’s lead in Group A to four points with 14 from their six games to date. Qatar sit bottom of the group with four points.
