TEHRNTIMES - Iranian-American coach Afshin Ghotbi, who was fired as the head coach of first division J. League club Shimizu S-Pulse last week, has bid farewell to the team’s fans in a statement published on his website.
Ghotbi, who formerly managed the Iranian national team and is a dual national, took the helm at Shimizu in the 2011 season. The team finished that season in 10th place. Despite his active use of younger players, the club made almost no progress. S-Pulse finished in ninth place in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Following is the farewell statement published on Afshin Ghotbi’s website:
Good-bye Shizuoka,
Three and a half years has come to an abrupt end. I feel an enormous pain to part with my staff, players, and supporters, who I considered family. I poured my heart and soul, blood and sweat into Shimizu S-Pulse. The results did not always illustrate the progress we made, but the journey inspired a new generation. I have no regrets; only wonderful memories etched in my thoughts and heart forever. I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your love, devotion, and support. Thank you for your everlasting cheers. I will remember you forever. Good-bye Shizuoka.
