In a telephone conversation with the Qatari Emir late on Sunday, the Iranian chief executive said the selection of Qatar as a host for the World Cup was a great occurrence in the world of sports, IRNA reported.
President Ahmadinejad pointed out that the opportunity could pave the way for enhancing the performance of teams from the Persian Gulf and Middle Eastern states.
“Indeed with proper planning, these matches will be a source of pride for Qatar and the Middle East and will lead to the improvement of football in the region,” he added.
FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter announced the result of the FIFA Executive Committee's vote at the Zurich Exhibition Centre earlier this month.
Russia was named the host nation for the 2018 and Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup games.
While Russia beat off competition from England, Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium, Qatar was named the 2022 World Cup host from a group of countries including Australia, the United States, South Korea and Japan.
Qatar is planning to build nine stadiums at a cost of 3 billion dollars and is to provide them with air conditioning that ensures players and fans a temperature in the stadium of 27 degrees, while outside it can reach over 40.
Tehran has also offered to assist the country with the planning.
