Steel Azin defeated Esteghlal 5-4 in the round of 16 Hazfi Cup at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran.
Farhad Majidi put Esteghlal ahead in the 23rd minute. Esteghlal’s Hanif Omranzadeh inadvertently put the ball into his own net three minutes later.
Captain Mehdi Mahdavikia opened Esteghlal goal from a free kick in the 57th minute. Hossein Kabi scored Steel Azin’s third goal in the 62nd minute.
Soon after, Esteghlal came from behind to lead 4-3. Siavash Akbarpour and Hanif Omranzadeh scored for Esteghlal in the 75th and 78th minutes. Brazilian Fábio Januário gave a lead to Esteghlal with a shot from outside the penalty area in the 80th minute.
However, the game was not over and Ali Karimi equalized the match from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining.
The game finally went to extra time and Steel Azin’s Reza Norouzi scored the winning goal in the 105th minute to book a berth for the team in the round of eight.
Meanwhile, Hadi Shakouri and Siavash Akbarpour were sent off by referee Turaj Haghverdi in the final minutes of the game.
