Football fans in the West Asian nation are currently in shock after Team Melli failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
The Osasuna midfielder wants all parties to come together to help Iran rebuild and then move forward.
"After elimination from World Cup qualifiers, we should all make an effort to find a way out of this situation,” Nekounam told Tehran agency ISNA.
“We may not be the best Asian team, but Iranian football is still prestigious in Asia.
"Better support from media and officials could pave the way for our success. Otherwise, the situation could become even more disastrous than what it is now", he added.
With South Africa 2010 off the agenda, thoughts are turning to two 2011 Asian Cup qualifiers against Jordan in November.
"We must plan and prepare well ahead of the Asian Cup. I have always emphasised the league's stars who could flourish by national team success, while negative results can have an opposite effect,” argued Nekounam.
