AFC - Zob Ahan’s hopes of gaining a domestic silverware this season remained on course when they overcame Saba Battery 7-6 on penalties to storm into the Hazfi Cup final.

Zob Ahan, who lost the Iran League crown to Esteghlal on goal difference after going down to Foolad 4-1 on the final day, will meet Rah Ahan in the two-legged title decider to be played on May 19 (Tehran) and 24 (Isfahan).

In another semi-final, a solitary strike from Mojtaba Zarie four minutes from the half hour mark helped Rah Ahan defeated Pas, who defeated Persepolis in the quarter-final, 1-0.

Fereydoon Fazli put Saba Battery ahead in the fifth minute but Mohammad Salsali restored the parity for Zob Ahan eight minutes later.

Hazfi Cup winners will occupy the fourth and final spot from Iran in the next year’s AFC Champions League. Zob Ahan have already qualified for the next continental event by finishing runners-up in the league and if they win this knock-out competition, fourth-placed Sepahan will earn the final ACL berth.

Zob Ahan coach Mansour Ebrahimzadeh said: “We would like to prove our strength this season. We have already qualified for the next year’s ACL but winning Hazfi Cup will motivate our players.”
