MNA - Iran’s Football Federation (IFF) has protested to FIFA and AFC over the distortion of the Persian Gulf name in a football tournament recently held in Oman.

In response to holding the 19th Gulf Cup football tournament, Ali Kafashian, president of IFF, has sent letters to the FIFA president Sep Blatter and Mohamed Bin Hammam, the president of the Asian Football Confederation, protesting the change of the name Persian Gulf to Gulf.

“The Gulf Cup football tournament is not officially recognized by AFC and FIFA but the countries used the fake name in the event. The Persian Gulf is the name confirmed by historical facts and legal documents of the international community. Hopefully, the football officials will take this illegal action into consideration,” Kafashian said.

The Gulf Cup also known as Khaleeji is a football tournament held every two years. It’s a tournament for the Arab Countries around the Persian Gulf.

Blatter has already stressed that the competition has to wait for some more time to be recognized as fully grown, as FIFA needs time to consider taking Gulf Cup in its fold.
