PFDC - LA CORUNA, A depleted Iran suffered a 2-3 defeat to a Galician selection in an exciting friendly match in La Coruna on Saturday evening.

A brace from Nacho Novo (23', 59') and a Lasanda-penalty (65') secured the win for a still unbeaten Galicia, while Arash Borhani (32') and Mohammad Reza Khalatbari (82') scored for the visitors.

The spectators in the half-filled Riazor saw an entertaining first half in which the homeside were the slightly better side, but Iran had the better chances.

Captain Hossein Kaebi should have brought Iran in front nine minutes into the match, when he found himself one-on-one with the keeper after a nice Borhani-pass, but once more proved he is no goalgetter as his effort could be saved by Osasuna goalkeeper Roberto.

Roberto was tested twice within one minute when he had to keep out shots from Majid Gholamnejad and Maziar Zare (17').

But it were Galicia who broke the deadlock 23 minutes into the game when Gholamreza Rezaei turned the ball over in the opponent's half when the advancing Kaebi had exposed the right defensive side. A long ball found Novo on their left attacking side, who beat the offside trap and nicely chipped the ball over Mehdi Rahmati.

Iran replied nine minutes afterwards when a Kaebi-cross from the right wing couldn't be cleared and Borhani vollied the ball into the net. The ball took it's final decisive deflection from Iranian midfielder Mohammad Nouri's leg, still the goal was given to the Esteghlal Tehran striker.

Galicia's Aspas should have been sent off eight minutes before halftime for a brutal challenge on the lively Khalatbari, but got away with a booking.

The last chance of first half was a Nouri-shot sailing over the bar.

While Galicia replaced almost the complete team at halftime, Ali Daei only made two substitutions during the break, however, subbed out all players but defender Pirouz Ghorbani before the final whistle.

Fortunately the many changes didn't harm the attractiveness of the match, in which the homeside now were the much more dangerous side.

The Galicians demanded a penalty kick six minutes into second half after an apparent foul from leftback Hassan Ashjari, but didn't get one. Although there had been light contact between Ashjari and the striker, the decision seemed to be correct.

But five minutes later Novo, who had played for Rangers in the Glasgow derby earlier on Saturday before flying to La Coruna for this friendly, scored his second of the day when he received the ball inside the area, curved around Iran's substitute keeper Vahid Talebloo and slotted the ball home.

Things turned from bad to worse for Team Melli when Khalatbari handed the ball after a freekick and the correctly awarded penalty kick was converted by Lasada (66').

The hosts had two more good chances in second half, but Vila (76') and Lasada (84') both shot wide.

Iran never gave up and should have been  rewarded in minute 79, when Jalal Rafkhaei was through on goal but was pulled down by the last defender. Unfortunately for him and Iran the referee's whistle remained silent.

Eight minutes from time Iran pulled a goal back when a deflected cross from Pejman Montazeri came to Khalatbari, who penetrated the box, dribbled past a defender and beautifully hammered the ball under the crossbar.

A header from Mehdi Seyed Salehi going over the bar (84') and a header by Meysam Baoo being saved by Villareal goalkeeper Diego Lopez (91') where the final chances for Iran to equalize.

Yet it was an overall satisfying performance by Iran, who had to do without all European and UAE based players as well as without some Iran based keyplayers such as defender Hadi Aghili or veteran midfielder Karim Bagheri, against a team consisting of Spanish Primera Division players.
