GOAL - Iran coach Ali Daei has
warned Ali Karimi that he may never again play for the national team after
rejecting a call-up last week.
Daei selected the 2004 Asian Player of the Year in his squad to face North
Korea in a 2010 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
Karimi, who had previously been barred from Team Melli after disparaging
remarks against the Iranian Football Federation, decided to turn down the
offer -much to Daei's displeasure.
“I knew that Karimi would not come to the national team but invited him to
show that I have no problem with anybody,” Daei said according to Mehr News.
“Each player has to dedicate himself to serve his motherland. If I were
Karimi I would never have rejected this invitation."
Iran have one point from one game in Group Two while North Korea have four
from two. Daei wanted to focus on the crucial clash in Tehran.
“I think we are wasting time talking about Karimi prior to a must-win game
against North Korea," said the former Bayern Munich striker.
"We have qualified for the 2010 World Cup qualification final round with
young players and we will be able to advance in the competitions with the
same players.”
