Xinhua - Jordan will play Iran on Friday in the final of the 5th West Asian Football Championship (WAFC) currently underway in Iran's capital of Tehran, local daily Jordan Times reported on Friday.

The Jordan national squad moved into the final after beating Qatar 3-0 while the host beat Syria 2-0 in the semis.

Jordan has counted on the title to improve their image after again exiting round 3 World Cup qualifiers earlier this summer.

The August 7-15 event saw Qatar and Oman taking part for first time with two of the zone's teams - Iraq and Lebanon - missing the event this time.

Initiated by Jordan, the West Asian Football Championship has been sanctioned by FIFA and made its debut in 2000 in Jordan's capital of Amman.
