PTV - The Iranian national
soccer team has defeated Palestine in the 5th West Asian Football Federation
Championship (WAFF) in Tehran.
Iran notched up a 3-0 win over Palestine in its first match of the event at
Tehran's 30,000-seater Takhti Stadium on Thursday.
Defending champion Iran finished the first half with two goals. Kianoush
Rahmati scored the opener from the penalty spot in the 20th minute and
Gholamreza Rezaei doubled the score in the 40th.
Both teams had many opportunities to score in the second half, but it was
Seyyed Jalal Rafkhaei from the Iranian side that managed to score the third
goal in the twilight of the match.
In Group B, Syria and Jordan ended in a goalless draw on the same day.
Iran is in Group A along with Qatar and Palestine. Group B consists of
Syria, Jordan and Oman.
The Iranian squad will meet Qatar on August 11.
Iran has won three of the four West Asian championship titles so far
awarded.
