Haveeru - Maldives will once again face off
against Iran in the Asian Games football event to be held in Qatar in
December. Maldives was placed in Group D along with Iran, which has won the
tournament four times so far, India and Honk Kong. The placement has drawn
comments from the foreign media calling it a very difficult group for
Maldives and an easy one for Iran.
The first meeting between Iran and Maldives led to a 17-0 win for Iran, a
world record at that time. However, Maldives has certainly improved their
game since then and in their last encounter Iran won by 3 goals to nil.
There are 24 countries participating in the men’s events at the Asian Games
Football and the teams have been divided into six Groups.
The women’s event at the Asian Games will also see the Maldivian women’s
football team facing off against some very good teams. The fledgling
