Sportinglife - Hamburg's pursuit of leaders
Bayern Munich suffered a setback as they could only manage a draw against
Borussia Dortmund at Westfalenstadion on Sunday.
The Bavarian giants' relentless charge at the summit of the Bundesliga
continued apace with a 4-0 drubbing of Duisburg on Saturday, leaving them
five points of Hamburg.
And Thomas Doll's side could only cut that advantage by one point, although
it looked as if they were going to come away from Dortmund with nothing when
Christoph Metzelder put the hosts ahead just before the hour mark.
However, Piotr Trochowski supplied the equaliser for Hamburg 16 minutes from
time following good work by Mehdi Mahdavikia to at least salvage something
from the trip.
Dortmund dominated the first half and should really have broken the deadlock
before the break.
Stefan Wachter saved well from Tomas Rosicky's free-kick while the Hamburg
goalkeeper was alert to palm away a shot by striker David Odonkor.
Odonkor saw another of his efforts saved in the 25th minute while fellow
frontman Ebi Smolarek was also denied by Wachter eight minutes later.
Dortmund opened the scoring in the 58th minute when Sebastien Kehl crossed
for defender Metzelder to power a header home from close range.
But they could not hold onto their lead as a long pass by Mahdavikia set
Trochowski away in the 74th minute and the midfielder slotted a neat finish
into the bottom right-hand corner.
Rosicky and Lars Ricken squandered late chances for the home side while
Roman Weidenfeller did well to claw out a Benjamin Lauth shot from six yards
out.
