GulfNews - Al Ahli defeated Al Wasl 2-1 in the First division football league's 16th stage here yesterday. The win was a sweet revenge for Ahli who were whipped 4-1 by Wasl at home in the first round.
With this win, Ahli leapt to the sixth place with 22 points while Wasl stayed at fifth place with 23 points. The match was marred by rough tackles from both teams. The referee flashed his yellow card eight times, five for Wasl players and three for Ahli.
Referee showed the red card to Al Wasl defender Ali Issa in the 62nd minute when he denied Ali Karimi a scoring chance by stopping the ball with his hands.
Both teams attacked from the word go. Ahli spelt danger through Ali Karimi. Karimi's swift penetrations caused panic in the Wasl defense who failed to stop him.
Karimi lost two chances before he scored the Al Ahli's first goal in the 30th minute. Following a throw in by Rasheed bin Mahmood to Karimi at the left flank, the Iranian advanced and went past two Wasl defenedrs, brothers Ali Issa and Abdullah. Karimi's shot beat the Wasl custodian Salah Hussain to his left.
Al Wasl stepped up the moves in the last ten minutes of the first session but Farhad, Rashid Abdul Karim and Cristian lost scoring chances.
Farhad Majidi had a bad day yesterday. He continued to miss chances. In the 49th minute he was put through by Khalid Darwish with only Ahli keeper to beat. But he shot on to the keeper's body.
Four minutes later, Ali Karimi scored the Ahli second goal. Karimi received the ball behind Wasl defenders who stopped to chase him thinking that Iranian was in an off side position. But the assistant referee's flag stayed down and Karimi advanced to hit a powerful shot that went to the right of Wasl keeper.
Wasl players ran to the assistant referee trying to convince him that Karimi was off side. But referee stood by the decision and Ahli led 2-0. Two Al Wasl protesters were shown yellow cards.
Al Wasl went all out for the attack. Ali Issa's shot went over the bar and two minutes later he was given the marching orders.
Cristian pulled one back for the home team from the spot when Mohammed Qassim brought down Khalid Darwish in the box to reduce the deficit.
Ahli defenders closed all ways infront of the Wasl strikers. Hamad Ghuloom and Cristian tried to level the score but all their attempts were blocked by a solid Ahli defence who kept their team's narrow lead until the end.
In the second match played at Kalba, Al Ittihad defeated Bani Yas 4-2. Zolo scored two goals for Ittihad while Tamba and Jasim Mohammed scored one goal each.
Abdullah Bashir and Abdullah Saleh scored the goals for Bani Yas. Ittihad are at ninth spot with 17 points and Bani Yas are at 11th with 11 points.
