PLDC - Iranian international referee Alireza Faghani says that despite being selected among 36 referees for officiating in the 2018 World Cup but there is no guarantee that FIFA puts his name in the list.
Faghani will be the first Iranian to officiate in the World Cup after 40 years.
Jafar Namdar officiated as a referee at the 1974 and 1978 FIFA World Cups.
“Iran, Bahrain, Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia are the Asian countries who have representative in the 2018 World Cup, however I think there's no guarantee for any referee. We still have a long road ahead and our performance in the AFC Champions League could be decider,” Faghani said.
Speaking about the 2018 World Cup opener, Faghani said, “We will not definitely officiate the competition’s opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia since we have problems with some Arabian countries and it can get us in trouble.”
