TEHRANTIMES - Omid Namazi, newly-appointed coach of US Under-18 football team, says that he has learned a lot from Carlos Queiroz after assisting him in Iran national team.
US Soccer on Monday announced that Namazi has been named as new head coach of the U-18 national football team.
“I worked as Mohammad Khakpour (current Iran’s U-23 coach) assistant in Steel Azin in 2010 and I joined the Iranian national team after one year,” Namazi said.
“I’ve learned a lot of things from Queiroz after working with him in Team Melli,” the 50-year-old coach added.
“I parted parted company with Iran football in 2014 after US federation asked me to work as assistant coach in the US women’s team. It was a good offer that I could not turn down the opportunity,” Namazi added.
Namazi replaced Javier Perez, who joined New York City FC as Patrick Vieira’s assistant.
The Iranian-American has previously coached St. Louis Steamers, New Jersey Ironmen, and Chicago Red Stars.
Namazi's first camp will be a domestic training camp with 36 players from Jan. 17-23 at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, which will serve as preparation for international games in Argentina in early March.
